The Unarius Academy of Science in El Cajon is inviting the public to a free Open House on Feb. 15 from 1-4 p.m. to celebrate Unarius’ 71st Anniversary and the 50th Anniversary of the opening of the Academy. Activities will include archival footage about Unarius and its cofounders, Ernest and Ruth Norman; a performance by the Unarius choral ensemble, And the Angels Sing; and a video montage from Unarius psychodramas followed by a panel interview of participants. The Open House will also feature visionary artwork, futuristic displays, and costumes worn in Unarius films.

In late 1974, Ruth Norman, known by her spiritual name Uriel, leased to own two adjoining buildings on the corner of S. Magnolia and Douglas Ave. that were originally the El Cajon Post Office in the early 1940s and later a local clothing store owned by Thomas Wigton, Jr. The grand opening of the Unarius New World Teaching Center, as Uriel called it at the time, took place on Feb. 14, 1975, with the El Cajon mayor cutting the ribbon for the opening of the doors. As Uriel envisioned, her new teaching center enabled new students, many from out of state, to gather for classes and special projects, including psychodrama filming.

The founders of Unarius, Ernest L. and Ruth E. Norman, were advanced clairvoyants and cosmic visionaries. The Normans began teaching a new science of life for the betterment of humankind in 1954, soon after they met and married. They pioneered the teaching of past-life therapy and the use of psychodrama as a healing tool of that therapy. Unarius was established as a nonprofit organization in 1957 and an educational foundation in 1974. The foundation has self-published over 90 books and produced three feature films on 16 mm and Super 8, and over 100 video programs, which have repeatedly aired since the 1980s on public access TV nationwide.

The Open House will also be webcast via Zoom and registration information is available at www.unarius.org.

Today, the Academy’s teaching center and world headquarters offer ongoing classes in past-life therapy on Sundays and Wednesdays, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The center is open to the public on Saturdays, from 12 noon to 4 p.m., and by appointment only Tuesday through Friday, from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visitors are welcome to browse the bookshelves, view the visionary artwork and the futuristic, scientific artifacts and displays, and experience the serenity of the garden-like atmosphere.
