Jessi Lydell Mendoza, 30, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder of Hayes, who was killed in an El Cajon apartment on March 8. Matthew Leroy Williams, 31, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and admitted he used a gun in the crime.

Mendoza will be sentenced April 15 and Williams on March 16 by El Cajon Superior Court Judge Daniel Goldstein. Deputy District Attorney Terri Perez said Mendoza faces a prison sentence of 50 years to life and Williams is expected to receive 21 years. Perez said Mendoza will get 25 years for the murder plus 25 years consecutively for using a gun in the crime.

Awaiting sentencing as an accessory after the fact is Lauren Rae Huett, 34, of El Cajon, who will be sentenced Feb. 26.  She could get up to one year in jail and pleaded guilty Nov. 10.

Jennifer Lyn Stein, 32, also pleaded guilty to being an accessory and was sentenced to two years in local custody. Her projected release date is Dec. 22.

A water agency worker discovered the smoldering body at 4:55 a.m. on a dirt road off Sequan Truck Trail. The sheriff’s department said in a release the motive for the murder was related to the defendants’ perception that the victim was attempting to gain custody of the newborn child of Stein and Mendoza.

Mendoza, Williams, and Stein remain in jail without bail while Huett remains free on bond.

Woman sentenced for attempted murder

Nine years in state prison was handed down Feb. 9 to Lymarie Rodriguez, 31, who pleaded guilty to attempted murder of an El Cajon man who was stabbed at the base of his neck and seriously wounded.

El Cajon Superior Court Judge John Thompson gave Rodriguez credit for serving 664 days in jail and fined her $2,500. Deputy District Attorney Nicole Roth said Rodriguez must serve 85 percent of her 9-year term before she can be paroled.

Rodriguez, of Chula Vista, pleaded guilty July 18, 2014 to attempted murder and a pre-meditated allegation was dropped that could have carried a life term.
