Today, more than ever, protect your skin from the sun

We are in the midst of a heat wave with temperatures that we normally do not see until our typical July fry and our fall Santa Ana oven blasting winds. Without getting into the debate of global warming, for now, exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun is the major cause of skin cancers.

In research, Cancer.org explains that though UV rays make up only a small portion of the sun’s rays, it damages the DNA of skin cells. They even break it down to the main types of UV rays.

UVA rays age the skin. Long-term skin damage causes wrinkles. Tanning beds give off large amounts of UVA, which has proven to increase the skin cancer risks. UVB rays directly damage skin cell’s DNA and are the main cause of sunburns and believed to cause the most skin cancer. Other side effects to long-term exposure to the sun are skin aging, loss of elasticity, dark patches, increase of cataracts and other eye problems.

Simply, they suppress the skin’s immune system.

People with light colored skin and eyes are more prone to the damages of the sun’s rays.

NASA reports that UV exposure has increased significantly over the past three decades, mostly in the mid and high latitudes. In studies, it also shows that at the 32.5 latitude that runs through central Texas UV levels have gone up by approximately six percent on average since 1979. The primary cause is the decreasing levels of stratospheric ozone.

That being said, let’s drop the science and talk turkey. I have been a sun bum all of my life, growing up in a decade when coconut oil was the best sunscreen you could have to get that golden brown that many wanted. Living in the South and being a sailor on the water for 10 years, my exposure to the sun increased right along with the increase in UV rays. Now, I am paying the price for the many hours I spent lying on a beach, the deck of a ship or just out and about with a majority of my body exposed to the sun. I cannot say I did not love it, because I love the outdoors and nothing feels better than basking in the sun’s rays. But today is different and that exposure comes with a heavy price, even death.

Melanoma is one of the world’s fastest growing cancers and claims one life every hour. That is a reality that cannot be ignored.

For more than 15 years I have battled with skin cancer. Luckily, so far, melanoma has not been in the picture, but I have had so many surgeries all over my body due to basal cell and squamous cell cancer that I have stopped counting. I swore to myself that for every scar I received from skin cancer, I would replace it with a tattoo. But that has become unrealistic for me at least, because a full body tat is just not my style.

Every couple of years I go through what I call a skin cancer purging. Last time this happened, they operated on nine places, two with skin grafts all at once and I left the hospital with more than 100 stitches, a long uncomfortable recovery and 11 new scars. Here shortly, I am beginning to go through another six. Whether or not they will need skin grafts is unknown until the procedure is done and three of them are fairly large and on my face.

I do not share this for pity, or for scare tactics, but to implore everyone to limit exposure to today’s sun rays and when you do, use sunscreen and wear a hat. 

Now I spend the majority of my life in long sleeves, long pants and always a hat on my head. I have no choice in the matter anymore.

Protect your children. They are starting life at a time when the sun’s rays are so much more damaging than when I was a child. If I am an example of what the sun’s rays can do, then just imagine what this type of exposure is doing to their young developing bodies.
