People braved the Arctic chill, winds, muddy ground and sizable crowd to meet Santa, roast s’mores, slide on the snow-hill and go on carnival rides this at Santee Lakes. Those were just a few of the activities at the annual Santa at the Lakes event, which drew in East County families on Sunday.
A festive, wintery environment with an impressive amount of activities got smaller children into such fun, from sledding on snow, pony rides, boat rides, a petting zoo and hay rides. Popular family activities included meeting Santa, making s’mores over a fire pit and holiday crafts to make and take home.
Volunteers from local high school helped with the s’mores and crafts. “I like helping people, serving them, plus it helps to pay for college,” said Destiny, a freshman at Santana who was joined with Leah from West Hills High School.
Santee Lakes is owned and operated by Padre Dam Municipal District that has put on this event for twelve years.
“Attendance was down a smidge this year, probably because of the weather being threatening and the rain the day before,” said Cindy Smith, Park and Recreation supervisor. “We continually add more for the kids to do, we try and get bigger.”
