Firefighters from El Cajon fire department visited the pool and gave the kids a fire-free demonstration. Campers got to tour the truck and even spray the fire hose.

Kids agreed their favorite event was the T-shirt race. Each team froze their camp T-shirt overnight.

At the same time, teams worked together to thaw out their shirts and the winner was the first to wear their team shirts and swim across the pool.

But the week wasn’t all fun and games.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one fifth of all accidental drowning deaths and accident victims are children 14 years old and younger. Campers were educated on the aquatic safety and the do’s and don’ts of water safety.

Heather Birchard, Fletcher Hill Center recreation supervisor, said “Under the Sea” was a great way for kids to come out, get out of the heat and enjoy themselves in the pool all the while helping relieve the stress of parents having to keep them under constant supervision.

“Everyday the kids had a swimming lesson so they would know the rules of safety regarding the pool,” she said. “It was great because we have an amazing staff of lifeguards who teach great lessons and at the same time keep the kids safe.”
