Plans for Marriott move forward as El Cajon approves another hotel

The groundbreaking for the new Marriott Courtyard in El Cajon is slated for September said Monica Zech, public information officer for the City of El Cajon. 

El Cajon City Council gave the green flag to the project on June 23. The hotel will be situated on the northeast corner of Magnolia and Rea Avenue.

The applicant is Excel Hotel Group and project planner is City of El Cajon Planner Anthony Shute. Outlined plans note the hotel will be 88,000 square feet, feature 120 rooms, a swimming pool, exercise room, meeting rooms, and commercial lease spaces on the ground floor. On-sale alcohol service and outdoor eating and drinking sites are also planned. According to the commission’s minutes the project name is El Cajon Courtyard Hotel.

The applicant, Excel Hotel Group, plans on demolishing all existing on site improvements, grade the site, and then construct the new hotel. The City of El Cajon stated that the new hotel will bring new jobs to the city and sees it as the first true four star hotel by a renowned company, Marriott, to come to El Cajon and could be an economic turning point for the area.

The Marriott Courtyard is scheduled to open for business late 2016.

Additionally the El Cajon City Council gave the stamp of approval for Hampton Inn to proceed on another 4-star hotel in El Cajon last week. The Hampton Inn will be constructed at the site of the old El Cajon Police Department headquarters.
