Eastbound Bar and Grill in Lakeside, held their 3rd Year Anniversary Party on Saturday, Feb. 16th. It was an all day family-friendly event, which started at 8 a.m., with an ‘All-you-can-eat Pancake Breakfast for Kids’. All kids 12 and under that came dressed in pajamas went home with a prize , the grand prize being Sea World passes.
The day was full of activities, which included face painting and live music in the beer garden. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. KSON Radio broadcast live from the stage area. One patron even arrived riding a horse, which all of the kids loved. They also were thrilled when the rider let the kids paint his horse with watercolors.
The day’s events also included a Hypnosis Show, in which “Hypno Diva”, Marsha Starr, entertained the crowd with a group of seven volunteers who were hypnotized. They pranced around the stage and acted like chickens, swatted at imaginary bees, and donned glasses they were told to be X-ray vision as well as other hilarious acts.
The crowd roared with laughter as it was a very entertaining show. The highlight of the day was the Beer Belly Pageant, in which the grand prize was a trip to Denver Colorado, tickets to a Rockies vs. Padres baseball game and a tour of the Coors Brewing Company. Four contestants were judged on three criteria, size, presentation and personality.
The four contestants got up on stage, danced and paraded around shaking and jiggling their bellies in front of the crowd and for the judges. Buster Gutman, who definitely had the biggest beer belly and who everyone thought was the favorite to win, came in at 4th place. One contestant, Mike Perine, a returning champ from 2011, who had his belly painted in a rather risqué way received 3rd place; and Chuck Abney, a returning champ from last year, took 2nd place.
In the end however, size didn’t matter as personality and presentation won out with East County resident Chase Upton taking 1st place. Upton then put on a show for the judges, while he paraded around in just his boxer briefs, and at one point he sat on one of the judge’s lap. He then continued to make his madcap way back to the stage, where he picked up the MC Tammy Lee (from the John and Tammy show on KSON in the morning), and carried her in his arms.
All of the contestants who participated took home gift cards or other prizes. The food and staff at the Eastbound Bar and Grill were excellent, as were the patrons in attendance. It made for a great day had by all!
