Pancake breakfast for financial literacy

The La Mesa Juneteenth Foundation is hosting a community pancake breakfast Thursday, June 19, to celebrate the launch of a new financial literacy program for local youth.

The event, which encourages a $5 donation per person, will take place from 9 a.m. to noon at McArthur Park in La Mesa. Families and community members are invited to attend.

The breakfast will include food, children’s activities and community engagement in support of “Start From Zero,” a financial literacy initiative created for 7th and 8th graders in La Mesa, Spring Valley and Lemon Grove.

Organizers said the program, in partnership with Mission Federal Credit Union, will offer each participating student $25 to open a savings account upon completion of a financial literacy course. While no classes will be held during the breakfast, attendees will be able to sign up on-site for future sessions.

“We’re flipping the script on financial education,” said organizers. “This event is about food, fun, and laying the groundwork for brighter financial futures in our community.”
All proceeds from the event will support the program, which aims to help close the local wealth gap.

Donations can also be made online or mailed to the La Mesa Juneteenth Foundation, 8030 La Mesa Blvd. #100, La Mesa, CA 91942.
