Organization of university women feature author

An East County branch of American Association of University Women is hosting an award-winning author as featured speaker at its April luncheon.

Susan Carol McCarthy, author of “Lay That Trumpet In Our Hands,” “TrueFires,” and “A Place We All Knew,” will bespotlighted during the La Mesa-El Cajon AAUW Branch’s 21st Annual Scholarship benefit April 29.

McCarthy was born in Florida and graduated from the University of South Florida with a degree in English literature. She worked in advertising at Walt Disney World before moving to California and settling in San Diego.

An online auction from April 22-30 will precede the luncheon, with a silent auction on the day of the event. Proceeds benefit scholarships to women and enhance career development for girls.

“In addition to participating in national’s AAUW Fund program, the branch provides scholarships to local women enrolled in Cuyamaca or Grossmont Community College or San Diego State University. Each year, we pay for multiple local 7thgrade girls to attend Tech Trek (science camp) and for aspiring high school students to participate in Speech Trek. We also hold a Career Day for 5th-grade girls,” according to La Mesa-El Cajon AAUW.
