Led by Mt. Helix Academy’s Marketing Coordinator and musician Tracy Singer as well as Performing Arts Director Michelle Foggiano, a group of performing arts students from Mt. Helix Academy in La Mesa showcased their vocal skills Saturday, Feb. 8 at Grossmont College for a school fundraiser.

Big voices from little people raised the roof in an impressive display of musicianship and a pure love for theater.

The event featured current students performing songs from past MHA productions, such as “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” and “The Little Mermaid” as well alumni playing jazz guitar, plus original songs written and performed by Singer.

“It’s a small school, everyone’s connected to each other,” said seventh grader Veronica, who sang “My Favorite Things,” among other songs. Connected, indeed. Catherine, 8, sang “I Don’t Need Anything But You,” from Annie while Singer, her father, sang along and played on piano.

MHA is a private school with a tight community feel, while setting sights high for students. Many students go on to performing arts schools after graduating.

MHA puts on summer and winter concerts in addition to plays.

“The school theater has inspired me to go to other theaters and perform there,” said eighth grader, Alex.

It was almost as if a light turned on inside them as they sang show tunes and medleys.

“We have always performed, it’s what we look forward to,” said twelve-year-old student Genevieve.

At MHA, kindergarten students through fifth grade get music lessons twice a week. Veronica, Alex and Genevieve all play at least one instrument.
