They call her the “dream chaser” and one of her dreams became reality, as Lakeside’s Brittany Miller earned the title of the Lakeside’s Optimist Bulls Only Rodeo Queen 2015. After months of work, on March 15, it began with morning horsemanship competition, a written exam on rodeo terms and history, a private interview with four judges—then it was time for the pageant.

Miller, 23, a native of Lakeside competed against Samantha Olsen, 18 and an El Capitan graduate. It had to be a tough decision for the judges, because both young women were stellar in their performances.

In the morning competition, Miss Bulls Only Rodeo 2014 Ashley McDonald demonstrated the course, flag and wave part of the competition. Each of them had to follow the pattern around the arena, using strategic turns, stops, backups and 180-degree turns. Then the flag and wave followed, with both contestants tightly hugging the rails of the arena.

The Lakeside Rodeo Community Center overflowed for the pageant with a lot of support for both, and the Optimist outdid themselves, cooking up a fitting 26th Opti-spaghetti dinner, for a night of pageantry and fundraising.

Miller and Olsen did informal western wear and answered impromptu questions on rodeo terms. For the formal wear and speech competition, Olsen wore a stunning white leather-fringed skirt, jacket, and Miller an elegant midnight blue sequin gown. Both of them were convincing in their speeches on why they should represent the Lakeside Optimist Bulls Only Rodeo.

The Lakeside Optimist Bulls Only Rodeo is July 17-18 at the Lakeside Rodeo Grounds.

Miller will be riding there sitting tall in her new official MBOR Saddle, sponsored by El Cajon Harley-Davidson. The Lakeside Optimist Bulls Only Rodeo is an annual event that not only entertains, but also raises the money for the Lakeside Optimist in providing needs for the youth of the community.
