Dirk Wallace, aka Dirk the Leprechaun, made a festive appearance complete with Leprechaun ears and decked out in traditional green St. Patrick’s Day attire when he appeared at El Cajon’s Blarney Stone Pub on March 17.
“A lot of people at the bar are anticipating the small man’s appearance today,” said bartender Paige Macmara, who added, “He’s known as the costume artist.”

Macmara, who Wallace describes as his “pot o’ gold” said, “Every time he (Dirk) comes in, he brings something special into the bar.” She was referring to the times when he dresses up as a Leprechaun, Cupid on St. Valentine’s Day, a Christmas elf, or a New Year’s baby on New Year’s Day.
“I’m four-foot-nine.” boasted Wallace about his renowned height. I started dressing up 30 years ago, with Papa Smurf being my first character,” he added. Wallace, who has also appeared previously in El Cajon’s Mother Goose Parade, said, “I’ve been told I’ve been seen everywhere, even on Facebook.”
“They tell me that they love what I do every day. I’m actually related to Red Skeleton by marriage,” Wallace added proudly. Concerning rumors about his reputation, he explains in one breath that he puts the correct news out there. When asked if he ever gets bailed out? Wallace retorted with “No, they can’t find me.”
Wallace stated that his biological father disappeared when he was only 3 years old. “I’m half Irish and half Cherokee. When discussing his height, he added, “My mom was around five feet tall, as was my biological dad as well.”
When asked about his love life, Wallace responded, “I’ve tried five times to get married, and five times it didn’t work out. I’m staying single, I gave up after that,” he added.
Describing what he likes in a woman, Wallace added, “I like tall women. They’re no fun if they’re short,” he added, in the event that love may be right around the corner for him.
Besides the appearance by the Leprechaun, the Blarney Stone also offered patrons its renowned corned beef and cabbage during this very traditional Irish St. Patrick’s Day celebration.
Festivities included patrons dressed in kilts, green ties, green T-shirts, and Wallace giving hugs while having his hat adjusted by well-meaning customers and, as befitting a Leprechaun, just being impish and fun spirited.
When asked what he plans next? Wallace responded, “I might find an Easter bunny outfit.” Be it hopping, shooting Cupid’s arrows, or as a Christmas elf — he is known to bring holiday joy to many a celebration. “I just decided to use my size to (its best) advantage,” Wallace concluded. And not only his size but his entire persona was put to good use and enjoyed by patrons on this St. Patrick’s Day.
