Live Well San Diego 5K set for July 30 benefits patients like Ella Martinez from Spring Valley

The San Diego Blood Bank, primary supplier of blood to the majority of hospitals in San Diego County, and the County of San Diego have merged their annual respective 5K events to Present the Live Well San Diego 5K benefitting the San Diego Blood Bank on Saturday, July 30, 2016.    

The San Diego Blood Bank, primary supplier of blood to the majority of hospitals in San Diego County, and the County of San Diego have merged their annual respective 5K events to Present the Live Well San Diego 5K benefitting the San Diego Blood Bank on Saturday, July 30, 2016.    

The event will take place at the San Diego County Administration Building’s Waterfront Park, located at 1600 Pacific Highway.  Start time for the race is 7:30 a.m., followed by a post-event Expo featuring a pet zone, kid’s zone and interactive activities for all ages. The event will benefit the San Diego Blood Bank, which supports more than 100,000 patients like 8-year old Spring Valley resident Ella Martinez each year.  

Ella (pictured right) is transfusion dependent due to thalassemia, a rare form of anemia. She has received over a 100 blood transfusions at Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego and will continue to receive blood every 2 to 3 weeks. To be eligible to donate blood you must be at least 17 years old (15 and 16 year olds may donate with parental consent), weigh at least 114 pounds and be in general good health. SDBB is dedicated to community health by providing a reliable supply of blood to patients in need. Our vision is to further ensure the health of our community by simultaneously delivering related health and wellness education and services and extending into research.  SDBB is an independent, 501(c)(3) non-profit  that serves hospitals in San Diego, Orange, Imperial and Los Angeles counties with blood transfusion products and reference laboratory services.
