Lemon Grove takes center stage in online documentary series

After a sold-out local premiere, the seventh installment from Lemon Town Films, “Welcome Home to Lemon Grove, California” made its official online debut on Nov. 1, on the Lemon Town Films YouTube channel: youtube.com/@LemonTownFilms.

The film will remain available online as part of the growing archive of town documentaries celebrating life across America.

It’s the first film in the series to be set outside Illinois, marking a major milestone as the project expands nationwide, according to the filmmaker.

And who is the filmmaker? It’s Michael Fanter, founder of Lemon Town Films, who said the story celebrates more than just one city’s past.

“This film is about more than just Lemon Grove—it’s about what makes any American town feel like home,” he said. “It’s got time-traveling lemons, real community voices, and a whole lot of heart. I hope this is the one that opens the door to telling stories across the country.”

The film combines heartfelt documentary storytelling with creative animation, featuring a giant flying lemon time machine that journeys from 1893 into the future. The whimsical element, Fanter said, was designed to make local history engaging for all ages.

“It adds a little humor and imagination, but it also lets younger audiences connect with the story,” he said.

At the heart of “Welcome Home to Lemon Grove” are the city’s residents—small business owners, community gardeners, city leaders, and neighbors whose everyday lives define the town’s spirit. Fanter said he was moved by the generosity and civic pride he encountered while filming.

“You can tell right away how deeply people care about their community—it really shows in everything they do,” he said.

The in-person premiere held Oct. 17–18 at The Neighborhood drew enthusiastic crowds and standing ovations. “It was magical. You could feel the pride in the room,” said Anne Stapleton, venue host and longtime Lemon Grove advocate. “Michael’s work captures something really special.”

The film also connects to the upcoming America 250 celebrations, using Lemon Grove’s story to illustrate the broader national narrative.

“Every community has played a part in the nation’s story,” Fanter said. “By celebrating towns like Lemon Grove, we’re really celebrating the spirit of America itself—the idea that small communities are the heartbeat of the country.”

Fanter, 41, was born in Monterey Park and raised in Lancaster before founding Lemon Town Films in Illinois. Returning to his home state to film this project was a creative and personal milestone.

“It felt full circle,” he said. “To come back and tell a story about a California community that embodies kindness and connection—it meant a lot.”

Producing Welcome Home to Lemon Grove also pushed Fanter’s creative limits and expanded his vision of connecting small towns across the U.S. through storytelling. Filming far from his home base required extra planning and precision.

“It pushed me to think more like a producer—making every shoot day count,” he said.

Coinciding with the online release, Lemon Town Films launched a new online store featuring town-specific merchandise and an exclusive America 250 collection.

“Every purchase supports the next film. Every view helps keep this vision going,” Fanter said.

Looking ahead, Fanter hopes to highlight more California communities, building what he calls a nationwide mosaic of small-town stories.

“Lemon Grove really opened the door to telling stories on the West Coast,” he said. “There are so many incredible communities here—from the coast to the desert to the mountains—each with its own story and character.”
