La Mesa salon owner has a ‘style’ for giving

Its owner, Gaetana Rosselli, best defines what sets Stylz salon apart from other hair salons that abound in La Mesa’s downtown area.  One wouldn’t expect a hair salon to be the place for wish granting nor fundraising, but that is exactly what Rosselli wants to announce to her community, as she is launching a fundraising effort to benefit a cause that is dear to her heart.

Casa Hogar Dibujando Una Sonrisa AC, is an orphanage in the outskirts of Tijuana, Mexico, whose interests Rosselli has taken to heart, and has been involved with, over the years.

“My involvement with this orphanage came at a time when I had experienced multiple losses of people that were closest and dearest to me. A family friend brought me there, and I fell in love with the children. Yet I realized that helping these kids actually helped me with my grief. I could relate with some of the kids’ losses and it helped me cope with mine, although I can’t begin to imagine their dire position of being in an orphanage.” 

Rosselli continued, “I know that people might ask me, ‘Why focus on an orphanage in Mexico when we have plenty of needy children right here in our country?’ To that question, I would like to respond that there are more resources here and there’s very little available there, because it’s such a very poor country. The kids don’t get any meat, most days. They just get rice and beans.” Rosselli stated, anticipating the possibility of that question being raised.
“That’s why I’m putting out the word that I’m collecting donations of goods, such as toothpaste, shampoo, diapers, soap and detergent. However the best thing would be (to give) monetary donations, so we can go to Mexico and purchase these items, along with some meat, right there in their country. Customs would tax these items; otherwise, that’s why money is easier to convert into these necessities. Also, these items are cheaper to buy in Mexico,” Rosselli clarified.

She stated that the orphanage, whose name translates into ‘House Of The Drawing Smiles’, shelters approximately 55 children, ranging in age from infants to teenagers.
Variable unfortunate circumstances result in the kids finding themselves in the orphanage. Some are not orphans, but may have parents who are in jail or lack the means to take care of them because of extreme poverty.

Rosselli has been a hairdresser for 34 years.  Her wish of owning her own salon came true four years ago when she had the opportunity to purchase Stylz, the salon where she was initially one of the hairdressers.
“I have been fortunate to be able to turn some of my dreams into reality, but I am always concerned for those that don’t have much, especially children,” she added.

“I used to volunteer at Children’s’ Hospital years ago. Now, this orphanage is in my heart because the kids there have so little, lacking even the most basic necessities, yet they are so loving, and always express their gratitude for the simplest gestures. It is humbling and a privilege to make a difference in their lives,” said Rosselli.

One of the best memories that she recollects, and would love to make possible for the children once again, is that of taking them camping. “I would love to turn some of the donated funds into a camping trip. I was able to do this for the kids a couple of years back, and they loved it so much that they never forgot it. The kids have no yard and have no real outdoor activities. I know that another camping trip would mean so much to them,” she said.

Asked what her fundraising goals might be, Rosselli ventured that she would be grateful if she could raise $1,000 for the orphanage. She invites anyone interested, including her fellow merchant community, to come into Stylz salon, located at 8348 La Mesa Blvd. in the heart of downtown La Mesa, and help make this heartfelt wish come true.
