Hyde Art Gallery opens two photography exhibits

Untitled # 1 from Thuy & Rice Video

Hyde Art Gallery at Grossmont College is holding an opening reception of two photography exhibits on Oct. 12 from 4-7 p.m.

“Thuy &,” is a solo exhibition of installations, videos, and photographs by Anh-Thuy Nguyen in the main gallery space, alongside “Somewhere We Know,” a student-curated photography exhibition in the Patterson Window Display. During the reception, there is an artist talk with photographer Nguyen that begins at 5 p.m. These exhibits run through Nov. 9.

Nguyen’s exhibition, “Thy &,” is a series of still photographs, installations and videos that highlight the complex relationships and cultural conflicts from her existing between two cultural identities, Vietnamese and American.

Created in 2010, “Thuy,” a semi-autobiographical character, was inspired by her yearning for home in Vietnam, which the artist could not visit due to her visa status. By turning the camera on herself, Anh-Thuy uses Thuy as a collaborator in the presented series of artworks, including “Thuy & Rice,” “Boat Journey,” “Thuy & Sand,” to gain perspective and explore those feelings.

This lonely character ventures into the space between two cultures and discovers the conflict that arises from being stuck between the two.

“Somewhere We Know,” a photographic exhibition that seeks to invoke feelings of familiarity and empathy within the viewer.

Each of these emerging photographers have recently or are in the process of completing their degree or certificate coursework in the Grossmont College Photography Program this year. Exhibiting photographers include Paul Allen Anderson, Ashleigh Edwards, Justin Fejeran, Chris J. Franco, Lexy Kendall, Alysha Phipps, Alec Sellers, Catalina Valenzuela, Angela Vasquez, and Salma Zuniga Leon.
