On Oct. 28, Home of Guiding Hands (HGH) hosted its 34th Annual Pro-Am Golf Classic at the Maderas Golf Club in Poway, CA where more than $52,000 were raised directly benefiting more than 1,900 local infants, adolescents and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The proceeds raised will also benefit current HGH programs and services in San Diego and Imperial Counties, including Early Start, Respite, Independent Living, Transportation, Counseling and Family Support, and Residential Services.

The tournament began with the much-anticipated send-off where HGH clients wished the players luck with a high-five as they made their way out to their starting holes. There were 34 teams, more than 20 volunteers and 34 San Diego PGA professional golfers in attendance. Each foursome was paired with a professional to provide the ultimate golfing experience for the attendees.

Returning to the course some of golf’s traditional games were played along with a fun, new contest for HGH attendees. Set up at 400 yards from the green, participants paid $20 to shoot their golf ball out of an air cannon. Needless to say, this was very popular with the players.

Golfers also enjoyed a complimentary lunch, silent auctions and sampled a variety of craft beers on the course provided by local brewers South Park Brewing Co., Monkey Paw, Fall Brewery, Half Door Brewing and Coronado Brewing Co. Also stationed on the course were BJ’s Brewery and a taco station from Eat with Alma Catering.

The evening culminated with a cocktail reception, dinner and an awards ceremony where the leading players of the day were recognized. The ceremony also included guest speaker, Beth, a resident of HGH’s Castillo Verde Home. She spoke about her job, love for bowling and her home, and HGH staff at Castillo Verde. Beth’s energy and smile lit up the room!

Home of Guiding Hands will be entering its 50 years of giving in 2017 and is well-known for inspiring people – infants, children, adolescents and adults – with intellectual and developmental disabilities to thrive in a setting that offers a more fulfilling lifestyle, provides individualized attention, stresses increased opportunities for self-sufficiency, and inspires greater community integration and access. To reach as many San Diegans of this underserved population as possible, the organization offers several life skills training programs to the local community, which not only requires hundreds of thousands of direct care hours annually to support this population, but also critical funds needed each year.

The proceeds raised from this year’s Pro-Am Golf Classic will assist in maintaining the lives HGH serves and create more contagious smiles like Beth’s!
