The Grossmont Foothillers and Patrick Henry Patriots got together for a basketball, er … football game last Friday with a combined score of 125 points — 10 points short of the section record. Patrick Henry won 77-49 to spoil the Foothillers’ home opener.
The 77 points were a school record for the Patriots
Fans in attendance, however, were treated to some heroic exploits as Patrick Henry senior Cody Cappelletti (22 carries, 134 yards) scored six touchdowns in the game — four rushing and two receiving — and Grossmont senior Thomas Donovan and his Patrick Henry counterpart behind center, senior Elijah Ruiz, each unleashed six scoring passes.
Donovan completed 29 of 47 attempts for 442 yards but was intercepted five times. Junior Noah Walker (15 catches, 228 yards) caught three touchdown passes while senior Parker Vanderburgh (eight catches, 130 yards) caught two touchdowns. Sophomore Tyler Holmes caught one touchdown pass for 21 yards.
The Foothillers were active on defense trying to contain Cappelletti as juniors Gage Weichelt and Drew Sasena each recorded 11 tackles. The hosts logged six sacks (two by junior Maximum Tufugafale) and two fumble recoveries.
Junior Damar Smith (five carries, nine yards) scored one rushing touchdown for the Hillers in the loss. Ruiz completed 23 of 34 passing attempts for 309 yards.
