The Grossmont College men’s volleyball team, which played for the state championship last season before falling to conference rival Golden West College, finds the Griffins in a similar position only with a different opponent.

This season, Grossmont is tied for first place with Irvine Valley College in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference standings, with the Lasers coming to town to determine the regular season titlist on Wednesday (Mar. 26) at the Griffins gymnasium. First serve is at 6 p.m.

A year ago, Grossmont and Golden West shared PCAC laurels, and then were placed in opposite ends of the CCCAA state playoff bracket. The ball clubs both advanced to meet a third time, but the Huntington Beach based Rustlers took the finale after the first two sets went into overtime.

Another showdown is expected once again when the championships move to Santiago Canyon College in Orange. Thus, Wednesday’s match will also determine playoff seeding along with a conference banner.

The Grossmont offense runs through setter Jorge Cabrera, who was named to the all-state championships team to cap the 2013 campaign.

David Stuart led the offense with more than four kills per set, but the team’s main statistical leader is middle-blocker Garrett Adleman, who ranks fifth in California in blocking foe head coach Travis Lee.
