Get together for veterans in La Mesa

American Legion Post 282 will host Together for Veterans: Be the One weekend from June 13 to 15 at 8118 University Ave. in La Mesa.

The event supports the American Legion’s national mission, Be the One, which aims to reduce the estimated 17 to 22 veteran suicides nationally each day. The campaign focuses on educating and empowering veterans, service members, families and civilians to recognize the signs of a veteran in crisis and take appropriate action.

The weekend will include free VA claims assistance from accredited American Legion service officers, a Veterans Resource Expo, membership outreach through the Buddy Check program and nearby participation in La Mesa’s 26th Annual Flag Day Parade.

On Friday, June 13, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., service officers will assist veterans and their families with VA claims at no cost and answer benefits-related questions. A membership outreach program will also take place. Dinner and live music will begin at 8 p.m.

On Saturday, June 14, service officers will continue to provide assistance from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. A Veterans Resource Expo will be held from noon to 4 p.m., along with additional membership outreach.

On Sunday, June 15, service officers will again convene from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. A family barbecue is scheduled for noon.
