La Mesa Village Association is holding its 6th Annual Halloween in La Mesa Village on Oct. 31 from 4-6 p.m. This event family friendly trick-or-treating in downtown La Mesa. Guests are encouraged to dress up in costume and to bring a trick-or-treat bag to collect goodies from participating businesses along La Mesa Boulevard and adjoining streets.

LMVA Marketing Liaison Elizabeth Ranta said this yearly event brings over 1,000 visitors in a two-hour period.

“This event is very popular with the local community. Many families come out and trick-or-treat all the local businesses along the boulevard. We already have almost 30 businesses signed up, so this is something the businesses love to do. They love interacting with the community and seeing all the costumes,” she said.

Team Z Realty is featuring a free selfie booth with an “over the top theme.”

“Last year, Team Z Realty did a fantastic ‘Barbie’ themed selfie booth in front of their office, so this year, since ‘Moana 2’ was coming out, they thought what better theme to bring up this Halloween. They go all out, and it is free to the public to take your selfie and it is a lot of fun,” she said.

This year will be the 3rd Annual Howl-o-Ween Pet Costume Contest, presented by La Mesa Realtor Melissa McCune. Ranta said McCune has many fun categories to enter your pet, and not just dogs.

“You can bring your cat, and last year we had quite a few exotic animals,” she said. “She gives prizes for first, second, and third place in each category. It is a lot of fun for pet owners to gather by the Fountain Courtyard off Spring Street and La Mesa Boulevard. It is a great area for your pet to relax. This year, she is also bringing a free photo booth for your pet, and she has fun Boo Bags for the first 50 attendees. There are lots of prizes for everyone and lots of fun.”

The Pet Costume Contest will feature a variety of categories, including Scariest, Cutest, Most Creative, Funniest and Best Pet/Pet Parent Combo.

La Mesa First United Methodist Church will host a free “spooky” organ concert at 4:45 p.m. playing a variety of Halloween-themed tunes. Ranta said this year’s concert theme is Pirates of the Caribbean.

“It is really neat to go in there, hear the organ music, and interact with them,” she said.
