El Cajon searches for Veteran of the Year

The city of El Cajon is accepting nominations for the 2025 Veteran of the Year Award.

The award is the city’s anual recognition of veterans “who continue to serve and strengthen the community through outstanding civic engagement and public service,” according to organizers.

The Veteran of the Year Award highlights those individuals whose post-service efforts have had a lasting, positive impact on El Cajon and the greater San Diego area, according to the city.

The nomination period runs through Oct. 17.
Eligibility requirements:
• Received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Military or National Guard.
• Be a resident of El Cajon or an active member of a 501(c)(19) veterans organization located within the city of El Cajon.
•Have made significant contributions to the community since their military service.

Officials said “the selection committee places special emphasis on a veteran’s service to their nominating organization, direct contributions to El Cajon residents, and involvement in the broader veteran community within San Diego County.”

A complete nomination packet must include:
• A completed application form.
• A copy of the nominee’s DD-214 or NGB-22 (with Social Security Number redacted).
• A summary of the veteran’s accomplishments.
•Two photographs of the veteran —one in uniform, if available, and one current.

Original photographs will be returned upon request. All submissions will be reviewed by the El Cajon Veterans Coalition for accuracy and completeness. The selected 2025 Veteran of the Year will be announced on Oct.31.
