Deputies crack down on homeless camps

Deputies with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Homeless Assistance Resource Team conducted an operation July 16 in Lakeside and unincorporated El Cajon following community complaints about unauthorized encampments and public nuisance issues.
Deputies had previously contacted individuals experiencing homelessness in the area and offered access to resources including shelter, mental health services and substance abuse treatment. They also warned individuals that camping on private property was not permitted.

As part of the operation, deputies arrested four people on outstanding warrants and issued 30 citations for various offenses. In response to concerns about trash and debris from motorhomes parked in residential neighborhood, 11 vehicles were towed.

The Sheriff’s Department said it remains committed to a balanced approach of outreach and enforcement, working with community partners to connect people with available services while addressing criminal activity that affects public safety.
