Thousands of people gathered together to celebrate the culture of the Chaldean community in El Cajon over the weekend. A multitude of entertainers, vendors and Chaldean and the popular shekhane dance were a draw for people of all ages.
“I started this dance at 6,” said 14-year-old Miladi Shaq from El Cajon, who was dancing the shekhane Sunday, Sept. 15, during the 4th Annual Chaldean Festival held at the El Cajon Centennial Plaza Civic Way. Joined by his friend Andrew Elia, Shaq said the dance is handed down through generations.
“All are welcome to dance,” said St. Michael Aid Society volunteer Sinan Hano. “This is a celebration of our culture to share with all residents. Many volunteers provided money and time to put this event together. Next year we are thinking of bringing a Chaldean superstar entertainer here.”
