Circus brings human-fueled spectacle to Parkway Plaza

Step right up — the circus is back and bigger than ever! The Marinelli Brothers Circus is rolling into East County with “A New Experience,” an all-new production that promises plenty of thrills, laughter, and classic Big Top magic at Parkway Plaza through Dec. 5.

This isn’t your average night at the circus. The Marinelli Bros. are blending old-school tradition with modern energy, creating a fast-paced, two-hour spectacle packed with high-flying stunts, dazzling acrobatics, and heartwarming comedy the whole family can enjoy.

According to Josue Marinelli, one of the owners and performers, the idea behind A New Experience was simple: bring back joy.

“We wanted a fun circus show with lots of laughs,” Marinelli said. “We wanted a traditional circus for every family to enjoy — and to start a new chapter in our lives.”

While smaller in size than some earlier shows, the new production is built on passion and personality. “It’s a smaller crew, smaller tent, but full of passion and joy for children of all ages,” he said. “It feels very personal.”

Audiences can look forward to an array of daring and delightful acts — including the Marinelli Brothers’ own Wheel of Destiny, a breathtaking Chandelier aerial debut, the gravity-defying Rolla Bolla, and a skilled juggling act. Keeping the crowd laughing from start to finish is Matti the Clown, a veteran performer who has honed his craft for more than four decades.

“Matti really knows how to respond to the audience and see what they like,” he said. “He keeps everyone smiling throughout the whole show.”

Even as the Marinellis honor classic circus entertainment, they’re not afraid to modernize a few moments.

“We try to keep it as traditional as possible with a few modern elements like our new Chandelier act,” he said. “We also make modern skits for Matti using music young people like — even trendy songs from TikTok that all ages recognize.”

Behind the Big Top, magic is a family operation.

Josue Marinelli is the office manager and general manager of the show, while Patrick collaborates with his mother, Patricia, in concessions, who also designs all of the costumes — she’s been sewing and crafting her whole life. She’s made costumes for many shows, including her sons’ performances. The family patriarch, Alberto Marinelli, manages lights, sound, and the tent setup in every town.

“He’s very passionate about the technical side of the show,” he said.

The production features about 13 performers and six crew members each night.

“It usually takes a few days of vigorous rehearsals before we start touring,” Marinelli said.

“Timing can be tricky, but everyone pulls through by opening night.” Touring life, however, has its challenges. “Definitely the driving part — and making sure everyone gets adequate rest,” he said. “Circus life is exciting, but it’s nonstop.”

Safety remains the top priority during every performance.

“Each performer has usually been practicing since they were about four years old,” he said.

“Circus people are very passionate and calculated when it comes to performing and safety. Everyone knows exactly how to stay safe — safety always comes first.”

The show keeps technology simple and effective: a new sound board, dramatic lighting, and fog machines add atmosphere without overwhelming the traditional feel.

Families can make a full evening of it by arriving early.

“We open our doors one hour before each performance,” he said. “There’s face painting, a bounce house, yummy treats, comfy recliners inside the marquee tent, and even a mini pre-show for kids.”

For the Marinelli family, A New Experience reflects five generations of circus tradition.

“With our many years of experience, we were able to put all of our talents together to make a high-functioning business,” Josue Marinelli said. One memorable moment came from a recent run in Downey, where a family loved the show so much, they came back every night for a week.

“Their little girl drew a beautiful picture of our logo that we shared on social media. It’s moments like that that remind us why we do what we do.”

Choosing El Cajon for this run felt like coming home: “We chose El Cajon because it was an old Circus Vargas location back in the day,” he said. “We have fond memories of this town — we really love San Diego and are super excited to be back.”

Tickets are now on sale at marinellibroscircus.com, offering discounts for children, seniors, and groups. Performances often sell out, especially on weekends, so advance purchase is recommended. The show runs for about two hours with a short intermission.
