The Mt. Miguel High School Alumni Foundation along with title sponsors Class of ‘62 Richard Crawford and Class of ’65 Jeri Scudder Crawford is holding its third Matador Golf Classic Fundraiser at Cottonwood Gold Course on Oct. 14, at 10 a.m.
All proceeds from the event will directly benefit the Mt. Miguel High School Alumni Foundation. The foundation is committed to enriching the lives of Mt. Miguel students by providing support for student scholarships, a diverse array of student activities such as athletics, the sciences, the arts, JROTC, Avid, and more.
Foundation chair and tournament chair Keith Padgett said this fundraiser is a “labor of love” for all at the foundation. He said that he has worked with nonprofits for years and has planned 50 to 100 golf charity tournaments throughout his career, so he understands how to make this type of event work for the benefit of the school. He said they chose Cottonwood because the event is being coordinated with the school’s homecoming, with the football game the Friday night before the tournament.
“It is in our old neighborhood,” he said. “That is where I first played golf when I was 16 in the 60s. It is an older course, but we are all familiar with that part of the county, even those who might not live there anymore.”
He said this year, he was surprised by a call for sponsorship, bringing in a new way to donate to the tournament.
“I received a call from New Jersey who said he did not live here anymore, could not attend the tournament, but his older brother had passed away,” he said. “He went to Mt. Miguel and graduated in ‘62, and he wanted to sponsor a hole in honor of him. It was pretty moving and cool, so I put that out to the group and many of us are going to sponsor a hole in memory of a family member or someone we were friends with in high school.”
Padgett said to sponsor a hole is $100, longest drive is $100 with four, and four closest to the pin for $100.
Admission for individual players is priced at $150, which includes a golf cart, or $500 for a foursome. Registered participants will receive a range of benefits, including Mt. Miguel logo-branded Callaway golf balls, a delicious, boxed lunch served on the course, exclusive tickets to the Mt. Miguel Homecoming football game featuring special VIP seating, and the personal satisfaction of contributing to a meaningful cause.
