Building positive memories for their boys and girls the Boys & Girls Clubs of East County did just that for El Cajon student, Noah Roberts, and many other kids at its annual awards event held at the Santee Boys & Girls Club on April 17.

Five Boys & Girls Clubs gave plaques to each of its recipients with categories ranging from sports & recreation, arts, health & life skills, education & career, and character & leadership. A youth of the year was selected for each location with nominees and final winner receiving plaques.

Boys & Girls Club locations included Santee, Lakeside, El Cajon, El Cajon Teen Center, and La Mesa Teen Center, said lead staff member Chelsea Andersen.

Director of Development for BGCEC, Lesa Mitchell, said the awards were “a celebration of our outstanding youth. Once a year it’s a chance to recognize these kids.”

Mitchell said the selection process for the nominees starts in the late fall with panel interviews of the kids whittling down who will be selected for each category taking place after the new year.

A special award was given to Jerry Fazio who retired after 35 years with the organization.

Math labs, computer classes, and a variety of activities are all a part of the clubs offerings. These are part of the activities that the winners showcased with their behavior and leadership skills that got them nominated.

County Youth of the Year recipient Mohammed W. Mohammed, from the El Cajon club, was selected and will be representing the region in Sacramento to compete for Youth of the Year on a national basis.
