Boat race to benefit terminally ill, families

All hands will be on deck as the Sharp Hospital community comes together with boating enthusiasts at the 10th Annual Sharp HospiceCare Benefit Regatta at the Coronado Yacht Club.

The Aug. 25 event will support the hospital’s Homes for Hospice campaign, an initiative to build and maintain hospice homes in San Diego.
All proceeds from the regatta support Sharp HospiceCare’s Homes for Hospice campaign. So far, the campaign has led to the completion of two homes in La Mesa and Del Cerro.

The regatta is hosted by Sharp HospiceCare, Coronado Yacht Club and Cortez Racing association.
The race, organized by Cortez Racing Association, begins at 1 p.m. on Saturday on the east end of Harbor Island. The regatta will wind around San Diego Bay, finishing near the Coronado Yacht Club.

This year, the regatta is expected to net $250,000 for Sharp HospiceCare’s Homes for Hospice campaign. Leading the effort as campaign chair is Scott McMillin, chairman of the board of The Corky McMillin Companies.

Sharp’s hospice homes are the only places of their kind in the county, operating solely to provide care and compassionate support to patients and their loved ones who are facing terminal illness. These beautiful, family-like homes are staffed 24 hours a day by licensed nurses and feature private rooms and lush gardens.

Ticket prices for the pre-race dinner, dance and auction on August 24 are $185. For the next day’s reservation on a cruise yacht, including lunch, refreshments, drinks and post-race party dinner, ticket prices are $125. The pre-race lunch and fun begins at 11 a.m. The race pushes off at 1 p.m. The spectator race starts at 11 a.m. The 1 p.m. race and spectator race begin at the Coronado Yacht Club.
