BNS Brewing & Distilling Co. has been in operation for just over a year, staging a first-anniversary celebration in mid-June. The Santee brewery kicked off its second year with the impressive accomplishment of bringing back a Silver Medal from the San Diego International Beer Festival for Gatling Gun Imperial Stout.

The competition, now in its eighth year, was held last week at the San Diego County Fair in Del Mar, featuring more than 400 beers vying for awards. Over 200 breweries entered the contest.

Dan Jensen is head brewer among the five owners of the East County brewing enterprise, and he crafted the prize-winning stout. “This has been a good year. We’ve been busy,” he says, taking stock of the past twelve months. “We’ve been doing pretty well over our first year. The people in East County have been nice to us, and we appreciate the locals who have supported our business.”

Gatling Gun clocks in at an alcohol by volume (ABV) of 9 percent, with a bitterness rating of 56 IBU. “It is a good, drinkable beer for its high alcohol content and has good flavors of coffee and chocolate,” Jensen describes his creation. (Roasted malts provide the dark color, robustness and complexity of flavors to stouts, balanced against the hops’ bitterness.)

BNS hopes to have the distilling side of the business pouring house spirits by year’s end. Jensen also outlines plans for building a small pizza kitchen between the brewing tanks and office spaces. The BNS brewers entered five of their beers into the competition, including their Lawmaker IPA, Flintlock American Pale Ale, Ma Deuce Double IPA, and Ole Prospector Red Ale.

Jensen has been a brewer for a decade. He says of his approach to brewing, “I like making good, clean, quality beer. And we are still learning here.”
