Battle of the Kiwanis fights for local youth

Normally I write about events in the community, after the fact, that inspire me in some way. Good in some cases, and in others, not so good. There is a battle brewing in our community in which there is only one winner—the youth of our community.

Two East County Kiwanis clubs are challenging each other to a duel of community service worth fighting for. To help the East County community raise the $4.45 million needed to construct the Boys & Girls Clubs of East County Brady Family Clubhouse.

Kiwanis is well known for its involvement in the community and our youth. And this 5K Walk-a-thon is just one example of how this organization continuously sets goals to improve the community around them.

La Mesa Kiwanis supports the Helix High School Key Club and the La Mesa Middle School Builders Club, while the Lake Murray Kiwanis supports the Grossmont High School Key Club. Together, this intergenerational team of competitors is working hard to make a difference and deserve the support of the community. The work that the Kiwanis clubs do in everyday endeavors is highly commendable, and is well known for its philanthropic efforts.

On April 5, the 2014 5K Walk-a-thon will jumpstart at the Helix High School track at 9 a.m. This time is approaching quickly and these teenagers and their mentors need the support of the community to make a difference. They are already beating the pavement looking for sponsors for the event and it is my hope that this endeavor can take a bite out of the money needed to complete this new facility. It is money well spent and our communities’ need facilities like this to keep our youth active, and give them a place to go when they have none. So many families out there cannot afford to keep their children active in after-school programs. And I am a firm believer in keeping our youth active in the community through sports, arts and community clubs. It not only keeps them off the streets, but it instills in them a sense of community, healthy competition and surrounds them with peers that are of great influence in their futures.

Let us not close the doors on these youth when they come knocking for sponsorship, but rather open a door to a better future for them and the youth that follow. Better than that, be proactive in participating or sponsoring this event. It is money well invested and the rewards are invaluable.

So here are some key ways to help. First, donations of $100 or more will get your name placed on the Sponsor Board the day of the event. This is great advertising for our local businesses. Personally, I would gladly support a local business that I know supports our youth.

Second, participate in this healthy competition by participating or sponsoring a walker. Any amount of money will help and in donating, you are not only building a state-of-the-art facility for youth, but also building encouragement, integrity and community service in the youth that you sponsor.
