Not only is Mt. Helix home to Easter sunrise services and state-of-the-art outdoor amphitheater, but also an up-hill victory for nearly 200 people for the annual Welcome the New Year Walk Up Mt.  Helix held on Jan. 3.

Carter Canedy and his grandmother, Judy Canedy, both hiked up the 1-1/3 mile mount with Carter’s dog, Atticus. Carter said that Atticus “stopped to sniff a few dogs.” Dogs of all breeds were welcome.  Both Canedys are repeat participators of the walk.

Kathleen Hedberg hiked up the mountain with her dog, Izzy, and son. Hedberg, re-elected recently to the Helix Water District Board, also serves on the Board of Directors for the walk’s creators, the Grossmont/Mt. Helix Improvement Association (GMIA).

Susan Nicholas, president of the GMIA board, explained that this is the 8th annual walk.

The walk started at the fire station on Vivera and Mt. Helix Drive. Walkers and runners included families with strollers and young kids, single walkers, and, of course dogs.

At the top in the amphitheater area Cal Fire had a San Miguel fire truck to show the kids. Starbucks provided coffee and Tom Huffman provided his handpicked tangerines. Pastries, cookies, and water replenished the walkers. Jan Connor and a bass player provided the mellow music.

Tourist Barbara Cavasso enjoyed the views going up the mount and was going to further investigate the views at the cross atop the mount.  The views, explained Jeff Rule, included Cowles Mountain, Mexico, El Capitan, Mt. Miguel, Cuyamaca Peak and more.

Next up for GMIA are the Art & Garden Tour on May 3 and the Succulent Swap on May 23. GMIA is a nonprofit that’s mission it to preserve and enhance the character and quality of the community and foster pride in the area.  For information visit www.GMIA.net.
