Cajon Cruise returns revving up a summer tradition

Downtown El Cajon is set to welcome back one of its longest-running and most recognizable community events as Cajon Cruise rolls into town this spring.

Formerly known as the Cajon Classic Cruise, the weekly event returns every Wednesday from May through August, transforming Main Street into an open-air showcase of classic cars, custom builds, motorcycles, and modern vehicles. Running from 5 to 7:30 p.m., the free event draws car enthusiasts, families, and visitors for an evening that blends automotive history with a lively downtown atmosphere.

The event traces its roots to the early 2000s, when it began as a celebration of classic cars tied to El Cajon’s long-standing car culture. Over time, it has evolved to reflect changing interests and a broader audience.

“Cajon Cruise began in the early 2000s as Cajon Classic Cruise, rooted in El Cajon’s rich automotive history,” said Gabby Manocchio, assistant district manager of the Downtown El Cajon Association. “Over time, as new generations became interested in car culture, the event evolved to include a wider variety of vehicles beyond just classics.”

That shift led to the rebrand to Cajon Cruise, expanding the event to include motorcycles and newer builds while maintaining its connection to the past.

Each week, Downtown El Cajon Main Street becomes a pedestrian-friendly gathering space lined with polished chrome, restored engines, and distinctive designs spanning decades of automotive history. The walkable layout, combined with nearby shops and restaurants, plays a key role in the event’s appeal.

“Visitors can enjoy the cars and motorcycles while strolling, dining, shopping, and exploring downtown,” Manocchio said. “It creates a lively, community-focused atmosphere each week.”

Attendance has grown steadily over the years, with participation reflecting a wider cross-section of the community.

“Participation has grown and diversified, with younger generations and a broader range of vehicles joining the event every week,” she said. “Each week, Cajon Cruise draws hundreds of attendees to Downtown El Cajon.”

The event’s evolving lineup keeps things fresh, with themed nights such as Camaro Craze, Corvette Corral, and Mustang Madness offering something new throughout the summer.

Attendees can expect a mix of long-term collectors and newer enthusiasts from across Southern California, contributing to the event’s dynamic and inclusive feel.

“Cajon Cruise attracts a mix of participants, including local car owners and enthusiasts from across Southern California,” Manocchio said. “That mix is part of what makes the event so dynamic each week.”

Beyond the vehicles, Cajon Cruise plays an important role in supporting local businesses.

The steady midweek foot traffic brings visitors into restaurants, cafés, and shops throughout downtown.

“This provides a strong economic boost during the summer months,” she said.

Live music and the surrounding dining scene help shape the overall experience, encouraging visitors to linger and explore.

The event also requires ongoing coordination to ensure a safe and accessible environment.

While Main Street itself remains open, select side streets are closed to accommodate features such as Bike Row and the Car Club Corral.

Looking ahead, organizers hope to continue growing the event while expanding its reach.

“Our goal is to continue growing Cajon Cruise while making it more diverse and inclusive,” Manocchio said. “We want to attract new audiences while staying true to its roots.”

As engines rev and crowds gather once again, Cajon Cruise continues to reflect both the city’s automotive heritage and its evolving community spirit.
