Women of accomplishment to be celebrated

American Association of University Women local branches will celebrate their accomplishments at its annual InterBranch Council Luncheon on Jan. 25 at the Lomas Santa Fe Country Club in Solana Beach from 10:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. The cost of the luncheon is $5. This luncheon is in lieu of the La Mesa-El Cajon Branch January monthly meeting.

Branches of the InterBranch Council include Cabrillo-Diego, Carlsbad-Oceanside-Vista, Del Mar-Leucadia, Fallbrook, La Mesa-El Cajon; Poway-Penasquitos, and San Diego.

Featured speakers are the staff of One Safe Place, the North County Family Justice Center, which provides comprehensive help that empowers people to move forward with their lives.

La Mesa-El Cajon Branch of American Association of University Women has been engaged in “equity for all” efforts since the 1950s and is one of the largest branches in the state. AAUW empowers women and girls by advocating for more women in leadership positions, closing the gender pay gap and preventing sexual harassment and discrimination. It supports girls entering Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math careers using research, education, and advocacy at the national, state, and branch levels to accomplish these goals. New members are always welcome and do not need to be invited to attend a meeting.

On Jan. 18, the AAUW La Mesa-El Cajon Branch is holding its Pirate Bingo & Cake Walk at Foothills United Methodist Church in La Mesa. Admission is $10 for members, $15 for non-members, but those who join the AAUW LMEC Branch at the event can play bingo for free.

On Feb. 8, the AAUW La Mesa-El Cajon Branch welcomes UCSD graduate student Sora Woo, who will be the featured speaker at the February meeting.

Woo is a PhD candidate in Integrative Studies in Music at University of California, San Diego. Currently, she is working on her doctoral dissertation on the musicking of Korean and Asian American women, situating women musicians within broader social contexts of the women’s rights movement in South Korea, the women of color feminist movement in the U.S., and the Asian American social movement. Recently, Woo has taught Modern Korean Music History and

Introduction to Western Music courses as an Associate Instructor at UCSD and has also joined the board of Association of Korean Music Research as a student member-at-large, maintaining an active membership in Society for Ethnomusicology and American Musicological Society. With the support of the American Fellowship from American Association of University Women, Woo plans to defend her dissertation and graduate from her PhD program in Spring 2025.

Additionally, the 2025, Named Gift Honoree will be announced. Every year the AAUW California Fund Committee honors AAUW California members who have done outstanding work in supporting the programs and goals of the AAUW Fund and/or AAUW California.
