On June 8 First 5 San Diego and San Diego County Library held a press conference at the Lakeside library to mark the third annual Talk, Read, Sing Day, which promotes the importance of talking, reading and singing to children.
The day also was the start of the San Diego County Library’s Summer Learning Challenge.
“Talk, Read, Sing has always been an important initiative for us because it provides parents and caregivers very simple actions that make a big difference in brain development and sets children up with the building blocks for success,” stated Alethea Arguilez, Executive Director of First 5 San Diego. “Summer is a great time to reinforce talking, reading and singing as schools close but children need to continue learning. We are grateful for the partnership with San Diego County Library as they offer tremendous services for families and children.”
First 5 San Diego is a branch of the county that promotes the health and well-being of young children.
The first Talk, Read, Sing Day was in June 2021.
According to First 5 San Diego, “programs and resources are designed to educate and support teachers, parents and caregivers in their critical role during a child’s first five years to help them receive the best possible start in life.”
“Interactive learning toys, books, and programs are available at all our libraries that offer reading, talking, and singing opportunities to promote early learning and literacy,” said Migell Acosta, San Diego County Library Director. “In addition to our early literacy resources, we also offer our Summer Learning Challenge beginning June 1st for all ages that offers activities both virtually and in branches to have fun and earn a prize by completing 10 books, hours, or learning activities.”
First 5 San Diego Activity books are available at local libraries and provide a variety of activities designed to enhance children’s skills and development.
