Coming up, a few of my favorite events of the year

There are a few extraordinary events coming up in the next few weeks that I believe the community should be aware of and hopefully take part in. Each has its own merits, but one thing that they all have in common is bringing the community together.

“Reflections of Olaf: A Retrospective”

First of all, if you love art in any fashion, then the exclusive works of Olaf Wieghorst at the Olaf Wieghorst Museum is a must see. It is not only a phenomenal exhibit, capturing the spirit of his works, but also a piece of El Cajon history and an accurate portrayal through art of the western times of days gone up to Wieghorst’s present. The museum put together one of the best singular artist exhibits I ever encountered, especially in the private collections that are rare pieces never displayed in public.

East County Chaldean American Chamber of Commerce’s Second Annual Masquerade Ball & Toy Drive

If you missed this event last year, it is a phenomenal event to start the season of giving back. And this black tie event held on Oct. 22 at the Babylon Palace in El Cajon by the Chaldean American COC is a great start. Combining the exquisite evening of entertainment, dancing, fashion shows and more is a great way to raise gifts for the underserved children in our region as all toys (which are mandatory for entrance) are donated to the Salvation Army. This is one of several events that The East County Californian is proud to help sponsor.

The Chamber goes all out on this event. Not only can you don your finest in style, adding the mystery of a masquerade, but I guarantee you that you will be continuously entertained throughout the evening. The Chamber is always full of surprises, but for a very low price and for a wonderful cause the evening will be filled with two fashion shows, comedian Vincent Oshana, and this year hosting San Diego’s first Best Hair Stylist contest.

Personally, I am a big fan of this Chamber and its inclusiveness to all businesses in our region and beyond. It’s mix of members is as diverse as the region it serves and all of its events are top notch and the Chamber meetings always serve a meaningful purpose other than a mixer to all of its members.

The cost for this formal fun-filled evening is $20 or $30 (Couple) and a masquerade mask and toy are required. Get your tickets now, as this event will sell out quickly. Tickets can be purchased at www.ChaldeanAmericanChamber.com.

Hauntfest on Main

This is another on of my favorite yearly events and it is not just for El Cajon. People come from all over East County and beyond to take part in this early family Halloween treat. There are no tricks here, and there is entertainment for all ages. It is expanding this year due to its big draw and this is a good thing because this event is packed with people and lots of things to do. Plus, the extra bonus is that kids large and small are able to have some pre-Halloween fun. There is always great music, which is one of my favorites, but I really love watching the costume contest. People go all out and the little ones are nothing short of adorable.

This is a free event and truly family friendly. So grab your costume early and come to El Cajon on Oct. 23 from 5:00 – 10:00 p.m. You will not be disappointed. For more information about all the activities, visit www.hauntfest.org.
