The family affair will continue at Monte Vista High School, where Anessa Carroll will follow the footsteps of her successful father, after being named the school’s director of athletics. She succeeds Zach Peck, who held the position for a majority of the century.
The family affair will continue at Monte Vista High School, where Anessa Carroll will follow the footsteps of her successful father, after being named the school’s director of athletics. She succeeds Zach Peck, who held the position for a majority of the century.
“I’m a Monte Vista alum where I played basketball,” said Carroll, an English instructor at the school. “Twenty years under a coach’s roof taught me a thing or two about the role of coaching and later the role of A.D.”
Peck guided the Monarchs boys basketball program to a pair of CIF San Diego Section championship games and many league titles in his long career. Carroll hopes to continue aiding school coaches to achieve success on the athletics front and in the classroom.
“I admire my father’s coaching achievements, and A.D. achievements, but would be even more honored if I end up being half the parent and person he is,” she said. “I hope I can be as ethical and kind as he continues to be throughout my journey.”
One thing Carroll learned is not to fix something that isn’t broken.
“I plan on making very few improvements,” Carroll added. “I am just trying not to mess anything up. I’m lucky enough to have been left a fantastic program with amazing and really hardworking coaches. I’m supported by a great administrative staff and unparalleled coworkers, plus a group of phenomenal A.D.’s in the district who have already been incredibly helpful & supportive.”
She also noted others in the Grossmont Union High School District and the CIF office, including commissioner Jerry Schniepp, with her transition into becoming the athletics administrator.
“Of course, it’s also nice that I truly love the kids at Monte Vista, they are as authentic as they come and just so hard working and appreciative, it’s refreshing to see,” she said. “Overall, I’m excited to help our student athletes achieve their goals and to maintain the integrity of our athletic program.”
Entering her 11th year teaching 9th grade honors English, Carroll serves as advisor to the yearbook staff. Her husband, Donnie, is a former two-time, first-team All-East County baseball standout outfielder for Granite Hills High. The couple has a 4-year old daughter.
