EL CAJON — Helen Looney and El Cajon grew up together — literally. Less than a year before the city became a city, Helen was born.
She recently celebrated her centennial while El Cajon will be gearing up for it’s 100th birthday in November.
Of wider historical significance, Helen was born just two months and two days before the sinking if the HMS Titanic on April 12, but to her and her family, this 100th birthday was special in so many little ways.

She recently celebrated her centennial while El Cajon will be gearing up for it’s 100th birthday in November.
Of wider historical significance, Helen was born just two months and two days before the sinking if the HMS Titanic on April 12, but to her and her family, this 100th birthday was special in so many little ways.
“I’m just so overwhelmed and happy,” she said while being feted at a party at the Springs of El Cajon Retirement Community., where a large cake, as well as certificates from the El Cajon City Council and even President Barak Obama awaited.
“I’m so happy right now I can hardly speak,” she said.
Helen, was also lauded by Kathleen Leonard of the management team of the Springs where dozens were in attendance at the lunchtime party.
Leonard read a list of statistics from 1912, including how just 14 percent of U.S. households had a bathtub, only eight percent possessed a telephone and how there were just 30 people living in Las Vegas.
Helen has lived in the East County for over 40 years and attributes her long life to good health and a positive attitude
She has two children, four grandchildren, six step grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and a host of step great grandchildren.
