Weekend brings bull riding, history and living legends

With the Bulls Only Rodeo in Lakeside being the Lakeside Optimist Club’s largest fundraiser of the year, this weekend is the last chance until next spring to see the one of the most dangerous sporting events in America up close and personal. Being the philanthropist organization that it is, the Optimist are allowing any active duty military with ID to join the fun and excitement that this event offers each year for free at its 7:30 p.m. performance on Friday for Military Appreciation Night. On Saturday the fun begins at 7:00 p.m.

On Saturday the fun begins at 7:00 p.m. We could not ask for better weather for the event and it always brings a crowd of rodeo sports fans from around the county and beyond.

Not only is bull riding a crowd favorite, but the Bulls Only Rodeo, now in its 18th year, has signature events such as Wild Horse Racing, and getting the kids involved with the very popular Mutton Busting competition. This is an event that rodeo fans do not want to miss, and if you have never been to a rodeo and seen this action packed sport, perhaps this is the time. Not only will you be thoroughly entertained, this event’s proceeds go straight back into the community for the youth of Lakeside. In supporting the sport you support the youth. Also on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m., the Heritage of the Americas Museum is sponsoring a book signing with Author James Thomas on his book “Corps of Discover, about the Lewis and Clark Expedition.” Thomas will be giving a presentation and is considered an expert on the facts of Lewis and Clark, and he takes his presentation to another level with a Cosplay style explorer from the period and displays and explains artifacts that would have been used on this exploration. This is an educational event for anyone that loves history and a great way to get your children interested in history at an early age. Admission is $5 for non-members of the museum and as always, children are free to come enjoy everything that this museum has to offer. I know I have spoken about this museum before, but if you have never toured this magnificent collection, this is a great opportunity to do so in tandem with this educational and entertaining event. Although not a part of Cuyamaca College, the museum sits on the beautiful green grounds of the college right above the Water Conservation Garden in Rancho San Diego.

Last, but not least the San Diego County Library’s San Diego Legends: Living Well exhibit will be on display at the El Cajon Library through August 1. But you have a chance to meet the “living legends” at a reception on Sunday, July 17 at 2:00 p.m. Now in its fourth season, this project with the county library and Aging & Independence Services has been nothing short of exemplary in representing the elders in our community that are living well and contributing to the community in remarkable ways. Each chosen living legend has a story behind the beautiful art of East County Artist Mona Mills, who by the way, was chosen as one of this year’s Living Legends. This exhibit will display all four years of our Legends and the reception is a chance to get to meet and talk to many of them. This is by far one of my favorite events that our county library offers all of its communities and not one to be missed.
