Soroptimist International of La Mesa held its 60th Annual Pre-Thanksgiving Community Breakfast at the Handlery Hotel in Mission Valley. During the breakfast, the volunteer service club saluted women from across San Diego who have received the Soroptimist "Live Your Dream" (LYD) Award, a program that assists women who are trying to improve their lives through education and training while overcoming obstacles such as domestic violence, poverty, homelessness, drug or alcohol abuse, etc.

Honored were LYD recipients from Soroptimist International of Alpine, Coronado, La Jolla, La Mesa, Mission Bay, San Diego, and Valley de Oro.
LaDreda P. Lewis, the keynote speaker, who shared her own amazing story of resilience and triumph over her challenging childhood. She is currently Executive Director of Sylvan Learning of La Mesa and CEO of 40 Acres and A Mind, Inc.
Also participating was San Diegan Susan "Sam" Buchenau, past president of Soroptimist International of the Americas, who assisted in presenting certificates to the honorees.
Soroptimist is a global volunteer service organization of women who work together to improve the lives of women and girls through programs leading to social and economic empowerment. Each year, Soroptimist clubs throughout San Diego County seek out women to apply for the awards. The Pre-Thanksgiving Breakfast is an annual celebration of the La Mesa Soroptimist club, which this year chose to highlight "Live Your Dream," the signature Soroptimist program.
