Sheriff’s office releases video of deputy-involved shooting

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office has released video footage of a deputy-involved shooting that occurred July 27 in Santee. The video was reviewed and approved for release by the San Diego Police Department as part of a multi-agency investigation.

The shooting unfolded after deputies responded to a report of an assault with a firearm at a residence on Willowgrove Avenue. At approximately 11:57 a.m., deputies were called to 9033 Willowgrove Ave. where victims had fled for safety. Deputies learned the suspect was barricaded inside a nearby home at 9016 Willowgrove Ave. and still armed.

Law enforcement attempted to negotiate with the suspect by phone, but he refused to communicate. The Special Enforcement Detail and Crisis Negotiation Team arrived and engaged in hours-long negotiations. During the standoff, a gunshot was heard inside the residence. Officers breached the door and deployed chemical agents after seeing the suspect further barricade himself.

The suspect exited the home and fired rounds at deputies, striking an armored vehicle parked outside. Three deputies returned fire, hitting the suspect, who was declared dead at the scene.

The suspect was identified as 55-year-old Michael Redding of Santee. The deputies involved — Luke Vories, Kevin McCauley and Parker Robbins — have between seven and 13 years of experience and were equipped with activated body cameras during the incident.

Per a 2022 countywide agreement, the San Diego Police Department is leading the investigation to maintain transparency. The District Attorney’s Office will review the case for criminal liability, while the Sheriff’s Office conducts an administrative inquiry. The FBI, U.S. Attorney’s Office, and the County’s Citizens Law Enforcement Review Board are also monitoring the investigation.
