A drunk driver will be sentenced Aug. 9 after pleading guilty to gross vehicular manslaughter of a woman and inflicting great bodily injury upon the woman’s husband when both were struck on Woodside Avenue in Lakeside.
Katie Ellison McGrosso, 22, of El Cajon, will receive a stipulated sentence of 11 years and eight months in prison for causing the death of Lorraine Kennedy, 57, and serious injury to David Sandale, her husband, according to court records.

Katie Ellison McGrosso, 22, of El Cajon, will receive a stipulated sentence of 11 years and eight months in prison for causing the death of Lorraine Kennedy, 57, and serious injury to David Sandale, her husband, according to court records.
El Cajon Superior Court Judge Daniel Goldstein dismissed a charge of second-degree murder after McGrosso pleaded guilty to the other charges that also include drunk driving.
McGrosso was convicted at age 17 of drunk driving and was prosecuted in Juvenile Court, said Deputy District Attorney Cally Bright. She attended Alcoholics Anonymous meetings for six months as part of her sentence.
McGrosso was driving without headlights at 8:20 p.m. when she struck the couple as they crossed Woodside Ave. near Winter Gardens Blvd. on Sept. 25, 2015. Her blood/alcohol level was .10, which is over the legal limit.
Sandale was in the intensive care unit of a hospital for 54 days. He suffered a lacerated liver, four broken ribs, with other broken bones in his leg and other injuries. McGrosso remains in jail on $3 million bail.
Preliminary hearing set for cold case homicide suspect
A Sept. 21 preliminary hearing was set July 6 for a cold case homicide suspect who was charged in June with the 2007 murder of Idris “Rashad” Jones, 29, in Spring Valley.
Jones was shot to death on May 7, 2007, in the 2300 block of Millar Ranch Road. The sheriff’s department continued to investigate the case and Marlin Lattereal Royal, 42, was charged with murder on June 13.
Royal pleaded not guilty in El Cajon Superior Court after he was brought here from a state prison where he was serving a 40-year term for a robbery and kidnapping that occurred in Los Angeles County.
Investigators have not said how Royal is tied to the shooting of Jones. Royal is housed at George Bailey Detention Facility without bail.
Woman to stand trial for attempted murder after stabbing boyfriend’s former pregnant girlfriend
A woman has been ordered to stand trial for attempted murder in the stabbing of her boyfriend’s former girlfriend who was pregnant and was attacked in her El Cajon home.
Shagirah Akila Joyce, 28, is also charged with residential burglary in the May 16 incident in the 1200 block of Petree St. in El Cajon. The victim was stabbed in her shoulder, forearms, and face in the late night incident.
El Cajon Superior Court Judge Lantz Lewis heard from the victim and other witnesses in the June 21 preliminary hearing. He set a trial date for Sept. 13. Joyce pleaded not guilty to all charges.
El Cajon Police found Joyce in a vehicle in the 200 block of W. Park Ave. after the incident. She remains in the Las Colinas Women’s Detention Facility on $1 million bail.
Young burglar to be sentenced after pleading guilty
A young burglar who broke into an El Cajon apartment complex that was being fumigated at the time will be sentenced Aug. 22 after he pleaded guilty to residential burglary.
Alexis Salazar, 18, admitted to going through a hole around 8:40 a.m. in a fumigation tarp in the 1000 block of S. Mollison Ave. on Oct. 15, 2015. Several apartments were burglarized and jewelry and computers were taken. El Cajon Police arrested a juvenile with Salazar.
Deputy District Attorney Will LaFond said Salazar is expected to receive a one-year jail term plus a 4-year suspended sentence. Salazar will be expected to pay restitution on terms of probation. He remains free on $100,000 bond.
El Cajon Police has warned that people could get seriously ill or die if they enter fumigation tents and are exposed to harmful chemicals in fumigated buildings.
