San Diego Section playoffs gearing up for basketball, soccer, girls water polo, boys and girls wrestling teams

The San Diego Section playoffs are closing in on the winter sports season. That means boys and girls basketball teams, boys and girls soccer teams, boys and girls wrestling teams and girls water polo teams are scrambling to get a leg up on their opponents for in the seeding brackets.

Mat attack

Girls wrestling starts off the championship run with divisional tournaments on Saturday, Feb. 4. Steele Canyon High School will host the Division I tournament while Holtville High School will host the Division II tournament.

Division I teams include Bonita Vista, Calexico, Canyon Crest Academy, Carlsbad, Chula Vista, Del Norte. Eastlake, El Camino, Escondido, Fallbrook, Granite Hills, Grossmont, Helix Charter, Hoover, Mira Mesa, Mission Hills, Olympian, Orange Glen, Otay Ranch, Patrick Henry, Poway, Rancho Bernardo, Rancho Buena Vista, San Marcos, San Diego, San Pasqual, San Ysidro, Scripps Ranch, Steele Canyon, Sweetwater, Torrey Pines, Valhalla, Vista and Westview.

Division II teams include Brawley, Calipatria, Canyon Hills, Castle Park, Cathedral Catholic, Central Union, Christian, Clairemont, Coastal Academy, Crawford, El Cajon Valley, El Capitan, Guajome Park Academy, High Tech High Chula Vista, High Tech High North County, Holtville, Imperial, Kearny, La Costa Canyon, La Jolla, Lincoln, Madison, Mar Vista, Monte Vista, Montgomery, Morse, Mt. Miguel, Mt. Carmel, Mountain Empire, Oceanside, Palo Verde Valley, Point Loma, Ramona, Sage Creek, Santana, Southwest El Centro, Southwest San Diego, University City, Valley Center and West Hills.

The section’s state qualifying Masters tournament is scheduled Feb. 18 at Mission Hills High School. The top four place-finishers in each weight class at the Division I and Division II tournaments advance to the Masters tournament. The top four place finishers in each weight class at Masters advance to the state tournament.

The boys wrestling championships will include four divisional tournaments and a state-qualifying Masters tournament.

Rancho Bernardo High School will host the Division I tournament while San Pasqual High School will host the Division II tournament. Brawley High School will host the Division III tournament while Lincoln High School will host the Division IV tournament – all on Feb. 11.

The Masters tournament is scheduled Feb. 17-18 at Mission Hills High School. Medals will be awarded to the top seven place-finishers in each of the Division I and Division II tournaments, the top six in Division III and the top four in Division IV.

The top four place-finishers in the Masters tournament will receive medals.

Division I schools include Bonita Vista, Calexico, Canyon Crest Academy, Del Norte, Eastlake, El Camino, Helix Charter, Hoover, Otay Ranch, Patrick Henry, Poway, Rancho Bernardo, San Diego, San Marcos, Sweetwater, Torrey Pines and Westview.

Division IV schools include Army-Navy Academy, Calipatria, Canyon Hills, Christian, Clairemont, Coastal Academy, Crawford, Guajome Park Academy, High Tech High Chula Vista, Holtville, Imperial, Kearny, La Jolla, Lincoln, Madison, Mar Vista, Mater Dei Catholic, Mountain Empire, Mt. Miguel, Palo Verde Valley, Sage Creek and Valley Center.

Hooping it up

First-round play in the basketball playoffs tips off Feb. 14-15, with the Open Division quarterfinals starting Feb. 17.

Finals sites for the Open Division and Division I have yet to be determined. However, Mira Mesa High School will host the boys and girls Division III finals on Feb. 23 and the Division II finals on Feb. 24.

Meanwhile, Otay Ranch High School will host the boys and girls Division V finals on Feb. 23 and the boys and girls Division IV finals on Feb. 24.

The playoffs will consist of six divisions. The Open Division will include eight teams while the remaining divisions will include 16 teams each for a full bracket.

All eight Open Division teams qualify for the Southern California regionals while semifinalists and finalists from Division I will do so. The champion and runner-up from the Division II and Division III finals advance to the regionals while only the champion in Division IV and Division V will qualify to extend their seasons beyond the section level.

Getting their kicks

The soccer playoffs will also feature six divisions. The Open Division will consist of eight teams while all other divisions will include 12 teams (with the top four-seeded teams receiving a bye in the first round).

Girls teams will kick off postseason play on Feb. 14 and Feb. 15 for boys teams. The Open Division quarterfinals kick off Feb. 14 for girls teams and Feb. 15 for boys teams.

Championship game locations have yet to be determined for the Open Division and Division I playoffs while Bonita Vista High School’s new stadium complex will host the Division III finals on Feb. 23 and the Division II finals on Feb. 24.

University City will host the Division IV finals on Feb. 23 and the Division V finals on Feb. 24.

The finals will include both genders at each site.

The top four teams from the Open Division advance to the state regionals while champions from the other divisions also qualify.

Making a splash

The Open Division will include eight teams and 12 each in Division I, Division II and Division III. Division I and Division III teams will open the playoffs on Tuesday, Feb. 7, while Division II teams will open the playoffs on Thursday, Feb. 9. The Open Division starts play on Wednesday, Feb. 8.

Should a play-in game be necessary, it will be played on Monday, Feb. 6.

The playoffs run quickly. Division III teams will advance to the quarterfinals on Friday, Feb. 10, at La Jolla high School while quarterfinals in Division I and Division II will be played on Saturday, Feb. 11, at the same site.

All semifinals will take place at La Jolla High School. Semifinals for Division III are scheduled on Monday, Feb. 13, followed by semifinals in the Open Division on Tuesday, Feb. 14, semifinals in Division I on Wednesday, Feb. 15, and semifinals in Division II on Thursday, Feb. 16.

The championship quintuple-header (five games) is scheduled for Feb. 18, also at LJHS. The five games will feature the four divisional finals plus a state play-in game.
