Photographers challenged to capture ‘Life at the Lake’

Now in its eleventh year, the Helix Water District is holding its Lake Jennings Spring Photo Contest and is open to photos taken at Lake Jennings during the period of March 1 and May
31. Participants get a free day
pass to access, explore and photograph the reservoir, with the 2022 theme of “Life at the Lake.”
Photos can capture any aspect of the lake. Divided into two divisions, adult and youth, first-place winners in each division will receive $150, second-place $100, and third-place $50, presented at a June public board meeting. Judging will be performed by a panel of Helix Water District staff, based on this year’s theme, visual appeal, technical quality and creativity.
HWD Public Affairs Vince Dambrose said the point of the contest is that there are many points of views and perspectives of Lake Jennings.
“This is a fun way of being able to capture those is through this contest,” he said. “We will have photographers out there enjoying beautiful Lake Jennings, but also being able to submit their photos to us. In turn, we use it to promote the lake and help get more people out there so they can all the joy, beauty, and great things out there.”
Lake Recreation Manager Kira Haley said it is a great chance for them to see what other people see as far as the beauty of
the lake.
“We see it every day,” she said. “But we are not the ones out there fishing, playing on the playground, or boating. Getting to see that from their perspective is extremely valuable for us. We then can use the photos to promote the lake and hopefully get new customers out here because of the beauty of the lake that these entries capture.”
Haley said the point in the contest is also to get people to the lake who may have never been there before, and that the
lake is open every day.
Dambrose said the contest brings in a wide variety of different experiences, whether some p
hotographers challenged to capture ‘Life at the Lake’ one took photos while fishing, or camping.
“Their photos highlight those experiences and there are so many ways to enjoy and experience the lake and this contest can capture that and then we can share it with other people who may be curious about the lake and may not have been out
there to experience this beautiful local reservoir in people’s local backyards,” he said.
Participants must submit entries digitally to photocontest@helixwater.org by 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, May 31. There is a limit of three photo submissions per photographer, and photos may not contain watermarks.
