The San Diego County Fair had three days of Open Tuff Trucks racing competition June 22-24, and El Cajon driver Jason McNeil won two of those races.

Each driver was given four runs on the Del Mar Arena course and the fastest run constituted the driver’s official time.

McNeil had a winning time of 34.59 seconds June 22 with Norco’s Sean Kepler placing second at 36.05 seconds.

The June 23 racing ended with McNeil having the fastest run of the day at 38.478 seconds and second-place Jacob Andrew of Wisconsin finishing the course in 38.812 seconds.

“The competition gets better every year,” McNeil said.  “It’s just getting harder and harder every year.”

McNeil, who is now 40, has raced Tuff Trucks for 22 years. He started racing as a teenager.

“We’ve been out here every year since,” he said.

The use of “we” includes McNeil’s brothers, 36-year-old Brandon McNeil and 32-year-old T.K. McNeil.

“We probably have 15 of the wins,” Jason McNeil said.

Their father, Rex McNeil, was an off-road and Cajon Speedway racer.

Jason McNeil grew up in Blossom Valley and attended El Capitan High School.

McNeil won his races in a 2016 Baja Lite XR with an L53 Corvette motor.

“The truck ran flawless, no problems,” he said.

San Diego driver Aaron Van Velsir won the June 24 race.

“We’re used to winning by three and four seconds, but these guys are getting good,” McNeil said.
