Matadors fall from the ranks of the unbeatens

The Mt. Miguel Matadors were the final East County team to fall from the ranks of the unbeatens after dropping a 46-38 non-league decision to visiting Los Angeles Loyola last Friday.

Junior quarterback A.J. Stowers passed for 481 yards and five touchdowns in the setback while junior A.J. Logan had nine catches for 196 yards and three touchdowns. Junior Brandon Arrington had three catches for 94 yards and one touchdown while senior Ezelle Buchanan had four catches for 70 yards and one touchdown.

Stowers finished the game with 495 total offensive yards by tacking on 14 rushing yards.

In a game that featured 957 offensive yards between the teams, senior Avery Morris logged one sack on defense for the Matadors (4-1). The Spring Valley team amassed 525 yards in total offense in the loss.

Junior Ashton Pannell completed four touchdown passes for Loyola (2-3). Senior Clint Ettleman recorded seven kicking points for the Matadors, including a 30-yard field goal.

Mt. Miguel kicks off Grossmont Hills League play this Friday with a home game against the Grossmont Foothillers, who are coming off a 54-33 non-league win against Monte Vista.
