From early-November election days actively celebrating gratefulness for freedom, through Thanksgiving, each year’s next-to-last month calls for acknowledging received blessings.

In keeping with the season, Lakeside Farms Elementary School, on Tuesday, Nov. 5, held the school’s second annual Military Appreciation Breakfast thanking military families connected with the school for the service of active-duty troops and veterans, as well as the concomitant sacrifices of their family members.

Lakeside Farms principal, Matt Thompson, known fondly as “Mr. T,” opened hosting of the ceremonies.

“We appreciate the sacrifice of our military men and women, and their spouses, and we also appreciate the sacrifice their families make for defense and protection of our country,” he said.” We take great joy in being able to help instill pride in our country, and this is our little way of saying thank you.”

Classes performed patriotic songs, from the opening violin solo of “Anchors Aweigh,” with the kindergartners stealing the conclusion of the show with a marching rendition of “Yankee Doodle.”

“Mr. T” singled out for special recognition Chanin Massaglia, School Liaison Officer for Naval Base San Diego, whose area of responsibility covers large swaths of East County and South County schools, for providing his school “so many opportunities to serve.” Massaglia returned the praise, acknowledging, “Mr. T is one of the best principals” at taking care of his military families and students. Thompson and Massaglia recently collaborated on the school’s 5th graders field trip sending students to 32nd Street Naval Base to meet on-site sailors and the base’s commanding officer, before venturing behind the scenes to interact with a training simulator. Thompson further delivered particular thanks to crew members of the USS Boxer, who donate time to the school while in port.

One service member in attendance was David Ward, now a Navy nuclear operator as a Petty Officer, Third Class, and who was a student at Lakeside Farms Elementary for six years. He was accompanied by his mother, Wilma Ward, who works at the school, and by his 93-year-old grandfather, William Williams, who served the Navy for 22 years as a diver.
