The Easter Bunny made his rounds around Lakes Jennings’ coves and piers making appearances for all the families that decided to spend the day at the lake for its second Spring Festival. There was plenty going on along with those there to fish with a children’s pond for those 10-years-old and younger, paddle boats were free for the day for the families to enjoy, free hot dog lunches and a giant 2,000 Easter egg hunt in the early afternoon.

Lake Jennings Recreation Manager Kira Haley said that the event was meant for a day of fun for the entire family. The kids fishing pond was a 20 x20 ft. PVC cube dropped into the lake with trout stocked directly into the pond. Haley said it was a great way for those “first time fisher kids that have never caught a fish before.

“It is the only time that we ever guarantee catching, which is a really cool thing,” she said. “We sell fishing all of the time, we never sell catching.”

And fish they did. From infants to adolescents many children got the thrill of catching their very first fish. The looks on the kids fish as they got the bite was wondrous and the look on their face when the fish came up on the dock and started flailing in their face was priceless. The excitement of their first fishing catch was evident on their faces as parents cheered and encouraged them on.

Haley said that other than the guaranteed catching, this event was a great way to begin finishing off the spring season as they move into summer.

“There 17,00 lbs of fish in the lake right now this week,” she said. “We stocked 15,00 lbs last week and 15,00 lbs the week before so there is plenty of trout in the lake. We’re coming to the end of trout season and we still have one more round of trout stocking before the end of the season. So people will catch trout until about the end of May, and then we start catfish season on Memorial Day weekend. It’s going to be a fun day out here.”
