Gathering signatures from some of the Major League Baseball greats, MLB player and Official All-Star artist Gene Locklear completed a painting on stage. Floyd Smith of 5th Dimension sang a medley of songs, interacting with the crowd with “What You Won’t Do For Love,” “Mona Lisa,” and a little country in his innate baritone tenor. People bid on a signed Philip Rivers jersey, a stay at the Hotel del Coronado and some other remarkable rewards while most bought raffle tickets, choosing their favorite prize, and a chance at a cash door prize.

Taking its Annual Spaghetti Dinner to a higher level fundraiser this year, it was an engaging night for the La Mesa Lions Club, and with Locklear’s painting in the live auction, a one of a kind event. There was plenty of time to see friends, meet new ones and a great spaghetti dinner sponsored by Cupid’s Catering. Held at the La Mesa Community Center on Oct. 13, it was a great night for the Lions and a better fundraiser for the many charities it provides for the community.

La Mesa Lions Club President David Shaw said that they worked hard to “take it up a notch” this year, with a lot of planning and hard work behind the event. Shaw was delighted at the turnout and enthusiasm of all the people.

This is one of the Lions’ major fundraisers for the year for the many services it offers the community. Involved in the Lions in Sight Project, donating used glasses and a clinic to give good vision to the underserved, the Lions serve both its community and the world with its many ongoing programs. Locally it volunteers at Sharps Hospice Care’s LakeView Home doing yard work, sponsors elementary schools in the area, works with students in leadership and exchange programs, collects hearing aids for the hearing impaired and works closely with the San Diego Blood Bank.
