In its 52nd year, Lakeside Rodeo brings world class rodeo competitions – helping the youth of Lakeside

There were no disappointments at the 52nd Annual Lakeside Rodeo over the weekend. With four performances from Friday through Sunday, once again the El Capitan Stadium Association filled the arena with non-stop action as cowboys and cowgirls put their all into performing at their best, with several upping their game and staying or broncing their way into the nationals and charting in the PRCA 2016 World Rankings.

Along with the high-ranking stock from Growney Brothers Rodeo and Big Stone, Moreno, Growney, performances included many vetted word champions, along with those working their way up with each performance.

With Bareback Riding, Tie Down Roping, Steer Wrestling, Saddle Bronc Riding, Team Roping, Barrel Racing and two round of Bull Riding, stock contractors brought the best of the best in stock to ensure that everyone had to work hard to earn purse winnings.

Bullfighters Logan Blasdell and Joe Butler put their lives on the line, keeping bull riders safe and always, without thought, placing themselves between two tons of raging bull and a cowboy on the ground.

This year, the rodeo was graced with unprecedented regalia as Lakeside’s own Miss Rodeo California 2016 Rachel Owens-Sarno encouraged many of her state peers to travel from around the country to participate, with Miss Rodeo Arkansas 2016 Tori Miller singing the National Anthem at Sundays performance. The El Capitan High School marching band played “The Star Spangled Banner” at Saturday’s matinee performance.

Saturday’s matinee had a special treat this year with the crowning of the 2016 Miss and Jr. Miss Rodeo queens. After weeks of competition, Miss Rodeo Lakeside 2015 Amanda Hop turned over her crown to Taylor Finney, 25, from Santee. The life of a rodeo queen is nothing new to Finney, as Jr. Miss Rodeo Lakeside 2015, making appearances with Hop throughout the year. Molly Fagan, 15 and from Bonita, earned the title of Jr. Miss Rodeo Lakeside 2016. Finney and Fagan will travel around the country supporting and advocating for the sport of rodeo.

This year’s rodeo was dedicated to Kathryn Cunningham, a Georgia girl who now has lived in Lakeside for the past 26 years. Joining the ECSA in 1992, along with her husband Craig, she is passionate in her efforts in raising funds for the youth of Lakeside. Something she has been involved with in many ways in her many years in Lakeside. As part of the ECSA, she has served as officer, secretary and is currently an elected member of the Board of Directors.
