High school dedicating clubhouse to former ball player

Shon Boney

Grossmont High School will dedicate its baseball clubhouse to honor Shon Boney, 1986 GHS graduate, at a celebration of the school’s rich baseball history and tradition at GHS’s Joe Gizoni Field on Dec. 16.

GHS leads the county with 13 CIF-San Diego championships and is the alma mater of Joe Musgrove (Class of 2001) who made history in 2021 as the first San Diego Padres pitcher to throw a no-hitter.

The event is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m., will feature two alumni games, the dedication ceremony at 11 a.m., lunch, and a home run derby.

Shon Boney was a standout Foothiller infielder who was named in the Daily Californian’s All-Grossmont League First Team. He went on to play college baseball at UCLA before becoming an esteemed East San Diego County businessman.

As the grandson of Henry Boney, founder of Boney’s grocery stores, which were later renamed Henry’s Marketplace, Shon became an integral part of the family business. After the sale of Henry’s stores,

Shon moved to Arizona where he co-founded Sprouts Farmers Market. Sprouts grew from one store in 2002 to what is now one of the leading natural grocery chains in America. Shon passed away from cancer in 2021, and the GHS baseball clubhouse will be named “Shon Boney Baseball Field Clubhouse” in his honor.

The Grossmont Union High School District approved the clubhouse dedication that recognized Shon as a “respected Grossmont High School student-athlete on and off the baseball field who embodied what it meant to be a Foothiller,” in a January 2023 resolution.

“We’ve known we wanted to do something big to recognize Shon and all of his contributions to our community, and all he did for people around the country,” stated Grossmont High School Principal Dan Barnes in a press release. “He was a great baseball player here, but his character and giving heart also provide all of us Foothillers with an example to follow. Naming the clubhouse after Shon is something we’ve had in the works for a while now, and we’re so happy to be honoring his memory here at Grossmont.”
